One of our artists in residence, Veronica Maguire, will be receiving the Canada Council of Arts, Jacqueline Lemieux Prize on July 12, 2014.

The Jacqueline Lemieux Prize is awarded to the most deserving applicant in the Canada Council’s Dance Section Grants to Dance Professionals Program. The award was established in 1980 in memory of Jacqueline Lemieux’s profound contribution to the development of Canadian dance. The award is valued at $6,000.

Veronica Maguire co-founded Alma de España Flamenco Dance Company and School with her late husband, Harry Owen in 1991. This summer she will be taking to the Royal Theatre stage as her dance company Alma de España in Pasajes. The piece features five international Flamenco artists as well as local artists. Veronica has been using her residency time here at the Dance Victoria Studios to work on and develop Pasajes, which intertwines Veronica’s life story with comments on the human experience of life, death, and rebirth. Pasajes will be premiering on July 12, 2014 at the Royal Theatre.
