Alvin Ailey® American Dance Theater in Victoria for One Night Only
An incredible program of four works that will leave you inspired

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performs May 1, 2018 at 8 p.m. at the Royal Theatre for ONE NIGHT ONLY – their only tour stop in Canada – with an incredible program never before performed in Victoria.

Ailey’s 32 renowned dancers will move you with a diverse collection of premieres that shine a spotlight on social issues and celebrate jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie.

Mass showcases Artistic Director Robert Battle’s signature ritualistic choreography set to a score by John Mackey, inspired by his experience seeing a choir perform Verdi’s Requiem at Carnegie Hall.

Battle’s high-energy comical dance, Ella, matches iconic Ella Fitzgerald’s virtuosic ‘Airmail Special’ scatting with lightning-fast, articulated movement that will leave the audience (and the dancers) breathless.

MacArthur “Genius” Kyle Abraham’s Untitled America shines a light on the impact of the prison system on African-American families, integrating Abraham’s distinct movement style with interviews of those affected by incarceration.

The Winter in Lisbon by Billy Wilson is a sizzling, sensuous ballet celebrating four decades of jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie’s brilliant music, creating an atmosphere in which the dancers challenge, tease and romance against a backdrop of rhythm and colour.
