Dance Victoria celebrates 25 years of bringing the World’s Best Dance to the Royal Theatre. On March 11 and 12, 2022, we welcome Ballet BC to the Royal Theatre for an imaginative program of original contemporary dance, Reveal + Tell,  by three celebrated choreographers whose works appear in the repertory of renowned dance companies around the world.

German choreographer Marco Goecke brings his new work, Woke Up Blind, created to music by Jeff Buckley and Van Morrison. Driven by longing, the dancers are drawn into a world of intense sound, outdoing themselves and competing with Buckley’s vocal power and guitar, illuminated from the background by the light of distant stars. Geocke was Choreographer in Residence with Scapino Ballet Rotterdam for more than seven years, followed by Associate Choreographer with Nederlands Dans Theater in 2013. He has choreographed for Stuttgart Ballet, New York City Ballet, The Hamburg Ballet, Leipziger Ballett, Nederlands Dans Theater, Norwegian National Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, The Berlin State Ballet, Sao Paulo Companhia de Dança and Ballet Zurich, among others.

Ballet BC Artistic Director Medhi Walerski will share a new work set to an original score by Belgian composer Adrien Cronet, his first world premiere with Ballet BC as its Artistic Director. Walerski’s work often explores universal themes of human connection and the relationship between the individual and the collective. Aco-production withLes Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, Walerski will create the piece in collaboration with the company members. Walerski danced at the Paris Opera Ballet and the Ballet du Rhin before joining the Nederlands Dans Theater in 2001. He developed a close relationship with NDT and Ballet BC for which he has created several works as well as Bern Ballet, Goteborg Ballet, the Ballet State of Georgia, StaatBallet Hannover, Staattheater Wiesbaden and Charlotte ballet.

Crystal Pite, whose roots are in Terrace and Victoria, B.C., is a choreographer in demand around the world. The Statement reprises her partnership with playwright Jonathon Young with whom she created Revisor and Betroffenheit. The Statement could be considered a play based on a recorded script by Young, expressed by four dancers sharing a heated conversation around a conference table. Locked in a battle for control, the characters have been tasked with fuelling a conflict in a distant country. Tensions rise when they are asked to take responsibility for their actions. Crystal Pite has created more than 50 works for companies such as the Paris Opera Ballet, the Royal Ballet, and the National Ballet of Canada. She is an Associate Artist at three institutions: Nederlands Dans Theater; Sadler’s Wells; and Canada’s National Arts Centre. She holds an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University, is a Member of the Order of Canada, and the recipient of three Sir Laurence Olivier awards for creations with her company, Kidd Pivot and The Royal Ballet.
