Subscriptions to Dance Victoria’s 2023/24 Dance at the Royal Series are now on sale – a season of bold, breathless, boundless choreography showcasing the best dance from around the world. Four show subscriptions are available through the Royal and McPherson Theatres box offices. Single tickets go on sale on September 5, 2023.

New York’s Gibney Company opens the season on November 17 and 18, 2023, with mixed repertory by ”strong and versatile artists who appear to be physically capable of anything” (New York Times). A world-class contemporary dance company led by Gina Gibney and Gilbert T. Small II, the company is based at Gibney, a dance and social justice organization founded in 1991. The program at the Royal will feature Bliss (Johan Inger), A Measurable Existence (Yue Yin) and SARA (Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar).

On February 2 and 3, 2024, Compagnie Hervé KOUBI, an all-male dance troupe from France and Algeria, bring The Barbarian Nights. Wearing headgear inspired by Swarovski, 13 street dancers from Algeria, Morocco, France, and Burkina Faso evoke the humanity of the early settlers of the Mediterranean basin, with whirling dark skirts and moving with stunning fluidity against a musical backdrop of Mozart, Gabriel Fauré and traditional Algerian music.

Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, named the New York Times’ Best Dance of the Year for two years in a row, collaborates with Chitrasena Dance Company on Āhuti, an evening of vibrant movement, storytelling, and live music on March 8 and 9, 2024. Āhuti celebrates centuries of Indian and Sri Lankan cultures, blending traditional Odissi and Kandyan dances within contemporary contexts. Following sold-out performances of Dance Me to music by Leonard Cohen, Ballets Jazz Montréal returns on April 26 and April 27, 2024, with a program by all-female choreographers: Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue by Crystal Pite; a new creation by Ausia Jones called We Can’t Forget What’s His Name; and Les Chambres des Jacques by Aszure Barton.

Three Additional Special Presentations at Discounted Prices

Subscribers can save on tickets to three additional special presentations. Ukrainian Shumka Dancers come to the Royal Theatre for four performances of Nutcracker from December 1 through 3, 2023. Featuring principal dancers of the Kyiv Ballet (National Ballet of Ukraine) and the Virsky National Dance Ensemble, Shumka’s Nutcracker blends the grace and lyricism of classical ballet with the strength and power of Ukrainian folk dance. This classic tale of young Clara and her dream Prince incorporates Ukrainian traditions and symbols, grand orchestral versions of Tchaikovsky’s legendary score performed live by the Victoria Symphony, and lavish sets and costumes designed by National Opera of Ukraine’s Maria Levitska.

Contemporary circus company, Circa, has its Victoria premiere with Humans 2.0, for one night only on February 10, 2024. Humans 2.0 is a symphony of acrobatics, pulsing with music by composer Ori Lichtik. Towers grow and decay, bodies leap and are caught, as physical limits are pushed to their extreme. Created by circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, Humans 2.0 is intimate, primal, and deeply engaged with the challenge of being human.

Contemporary Indigenous Māori troupe, Õkāreka Dance Company from Aotearoa, New Zealand shares Mana Wahine (Powerful Women) on March 27, 2024 at the McPherson Playhouse. This all-female work explores the strength, spirit, and beauty of women and is inspired by the true story of a young Māori heroine. Mana Wahine is a fusion of choreography, bold projections, chant, original music, Māori costumes, and cultural traditions creating a contemporary work that celebrates female endurance and strength.
