Led by acclaimed choreographer and Artistic Director Kyle Abraham, A.I.M is galvanized by Black culture and history and grounded in a conglomeration of unique perspectives. Abraham describes his work as a “post-modern gumbo” of movement exploration, with a vocabulary drawing inspiration from Modern, contemporary, ballet, and hip-hop. This mixed program features two works by Abraham: If We Were a Love Song, a moving juxtaposition of dance solos to the music of Nina Simone, and the stunning silent duet MotorRover. Also showcased are two A.I.M-commissioned works by rising choreographers: Just Your Two Wrists by Paul Singhand YEAR by Andrea Miller.

Raven Mother | Indigenous Dance
Jan. 24, 2025 • 7:30 pm • McPherson Playhouse
Dancers of Damelahamid is an Indigenous dance company founded upon over five decades of extensive work of song and dance revitalization. Co-commissioned by Dance Victoria, Raven Mother is its newly choreographed dance work in honour of late Elder Margaret Harris (1931–2020), who had a significant impact on the revitalization of Indigenous dance along the Northwest Coast. The work illuminates the integral role of women in holding cultural knowledge. In Raven Mother, striking handcrafted traditional masks, movement, song, regalia, sculpture, and design are all interwoven with the embodied narrative. This work isthe company’s most ambitious production to date and will be the culmination of generations of artistic and cultural work.
“A visually striking performance that blends customary Indigenous dance forms with modern media. The overall effect is stunning.” —ISTVAN REVIEWS, Minowin
Shamel Pitts | TRIBE (Brooklyn)
BLACK HOLE – Trilogy and Triathlon | Contemporary
Feb. 20, 2025 • 7:30 pm • McPherson Playhouse
A trio of Black performers shares the stage in a narrative of unity, vigour, and unrelenting advancement. Their journey originates in the darkness of the titular Black Hole, understood not as a cosmic void but a metaphorical place of transformation and potential. The dancers are engulfed in an evocative soundscape of original music, sound samples, and spoken word, punctuated by cinematic video projections and stark, monochromatic lights.
“Curiously stylish and sincere, glossily cold and tender. Always visually striking.” —NEW YORK TIMES
