Friday + Saturday, February 7 + 8, 7:30 pm Royal Theatre

The world’s foremost all-male comic ballet company, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (New York), returns to the Royal Theatre on February 7 + 8 as part of Dance Victoria’s 2024/25 season of the World’s Best Dance. The company’s only previous visit to Victoria was in 2020 for a sold out one-night-only performance. Tickets are going fast!
The internationally beloved troupe of dancers will perform a landmark 50th anniversary program, as part of their highly anticipated tour that began in New York last month, featuring gems from across the company’s ground-breaking repertoire including Swan Lake; Pas de deux; Yes, Virginia, Another Piano Ballet; Dying Swan; Valpurgeyeva Noch (Walp); and Irish Encore.
Founded in New York City in 1974, the company, affectionately known as “the Trocks,” started out by appearing in late-late shows in off-off Broadway lofts for small audiences. Since then, the company has grown to achieve worldwide appeal among mainstream audiences who flock to theatres around the globe to see these prima ballerinas perform. Revered by ballet aficionados, as well as the uninitiated who don’t know a plié from a jeté, the Trocks are “a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals.” Sydney Star Observer.
Playful and entertaining, this skewed take on classical ballet and traditional gender roles is a perfect, polished parody of the highest order that has earned the Trocks a cult following! Over their 50-year journey, the Trocks have grown into a crowd-pleasing, globe-spanning phenomenon, having performed in over 43 countries and 667 cities for enthusiastic crowds of all sizes, as well as connecting with small groups through engagement programs that focus on elements of their performance, from repertory workshops to makeup seminars.
While in Victoria, the Trocks will facilitate a free Dying Swan workshop in partnership with Intrepid Theatre’s OUTstages Festival and hosted by PoleCoven as part of Dance Victoria’s Community Engagement programs, and supported by Stretch Dancewear. Dance Victoria’s presentation of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is made possible with generous support from Season Sponsor Derma Spa, Lead Presentation Sponsor Cameron Izard Snell LLP, and with public support from the Government of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, Government of BC, BC Arts Council, and the CRD Arts Development office.
About Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo was founded in 1974 in the wake of the Stonewall Uprising, with the first performances held on the makeshift stage of the West Side Discussion Group’s loft space in downtown New York City. Fifty years later, the world’s foremost gender-skewering comic ballet company now exists in a world that is catching up with their once highly subversive viewpoint, allowing their style of ballet to be viewed simply as sheer entertainment.
Whether you have sought out the Trocks or the Trocks found you: they love the audiences who appreciate their satirical, silly, skilled, slapstick corner of the ballet world – long-time fans and newbies alike.
