Heartnotes: A reminder that while we are temporarily staying apart and social distancing due to COVID-19, we are all still in this together.

An Update from Dance Victoria

I suppose many of you are wondering how Dance Victoria is faring through this pandemic. The good news is that we are all still working and that there is plenty to do. Bernard has done projections to the end of our fiscal year (June 30), and because of the generosity of so many of our ticket holders, we will finish this year in the “black.”

Planning for next season is interesting. With so much new information on a daily basis, it’s a bit like drafting a blueprint in a wind tunnel. However, with the help of our Board of Directors, we are prepared. (My scout leader would be very proud indeed!) We have built a lot of contingency plans, and we feel quite comfortable with each scenario. And of course, you, our subscribers, donors and sponsors, are at the centre of every plan. I am also very pleased that 16 long time sponsors have signed on for next season and that so many people have renewed their subscriptions.

We have an amazing season of diverse, dynamic and daring dance from some of the World’s Best Dance companies that we can’t wait to share with you. And if you haven’t renewed your subscription, we urge you to do so soon to ensure you retain or change your seats before we go on sale to the general public. Every subscription is 100% refundable. If COVID-19 restrictions impede our ability to present the new season as planned, we guarantee that we will refund your money. While we stay healthy at home right now, let’s dream about being together at the Royal Theatre when we launch our new season with France’s Hervé Koubi in mid-November. You don’t want to miss a thing!

Treat yourself to a moment of escape in the colourful, light and humorous universe of Itzik Galili’s O Balcão de Amor performed by Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (BJM). This is the first time that the work is available outside of the company’s international tour.

These images were captured during a rehearsal and residency at Maison des Arts de Laval in 2016 preceding the premiere of the work. BJM says, “After all, in this period of doubt and uncertainty, all the wonderful emotions that this work provides are welcome! To the rhythms of Cuban mambo, O Balcão de Amor invites you to a real journey in the Caribbean, to a moment of escape, to a simple break. Wishing you a wonderful trip!”
