Can we say A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!? First we were able to share with you Ballet BC’s Romeo + Juliet online and now we’re bringing BalletBoyz’s latest dance program, Deluxe, direct to your living room!
We’ve had the pleasure of presenting BalletBoyz twice at the Royal Theatre (2014 and 2017) and they never fail to incite the crowd into a furor, like being at a rock concert. Yes, it’s the rippling muscles of the all-male dance troupe, but it’s also the depth and creativity of the works that they bring from their studios in London.
This was the impetus for Deluxe. BalletBoyz co-founders and Artistic Directors Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt strove to find new choreographic voices to develop work with the BalletBoyz dancers to reveal unexpected outcomes. The result is two powerful works with unique vocabularies and styles, both set to original scores created right in their studios in parallel with the movement. And both works are created by women choreographers.
Maxine Doyle is an independent choreographer and Director and Choreographer of Punchdrunk in London. Her work combines intense physicality with an obsession for character and non-linear storytelling.
Xie Xin is the creator and Artistic Director of Xiexin Dance Theatre ( XDT) and is an Associate Artist of the Shanghai International Dance Centre Theatre.
In addition to experiencing these dances from the comfort of your home, there’s a short film prior to each work giving you insights into the creation process with the artists.
We’re guessing that like us, one of the things you enjoy most when you see a dance performance at the Royal Theatre is the conversations at intermission and after the show. We’re trying to replicate this experience and created a private Facebook discussion forum to share your thoughts, feelings and insights about this BalletBoyz program. We hope you’ll join the forum and feel a sense of togetherness even though we’re apart for now. This is a new experiment for us and our “first try” so we appreciate your patience. We’re excited to connect online! Once you click the above forum link, and we approve your entry (we’ll aim to do this as soon as we can), select “+ Join Group.” If you experience issues with using the forum, email [email protected]
We want to extend a huge thank you to Michael Nunn, Billy Trevitt and the BalletBoyz dancers for sharing Deluxe with us during these extraordinary times.
The Deluxe full-length video will be accessible from April 30 until May 6, 2020. This is for your personal access and we ask that you do not share or forward it. You have the option of downloading the program notes once you are on the video web page.
