Vancouver-based Artist in Residence
Kay Huang’s 安/Peace is a personal exploration centred on immigration, migration, social identity, and social justice, shared through the lens of her mother and herself. The work interweaves her mother’s migration story from Guangzhou to Hong Kong in the 1950s with the artist’s own immigration story from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1975.
Kay Huang (she/her) is a choreographer, educator, and dance artist living in the traditional unceded territory of the Salish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations known as Vancouver.
She danced professionally with Karen Jamieson from 1987-1996. Her choreography has been featured in Vancouver, BC and internationally since 1992. In 2021, she was a featured artist at the New Works Dance presentation at the Asian Heritage Festival. In August 2022, she was invited to collaborate with New Cambodian Artists in Cambodia and Thought Train Collective Vancouver, which resulted in a multi-discipline art and dance exhibition in December 2022 featuring her work Crossing. The work was also presented at Eight and Eight Creative Space at the Massey Theatre as part of the 2023/24 season.
Huang was selected as the 2022/23 Artist-In-Residence at New Works Dance and developed the solo work Yellow. In the same year, her collective, VDCM, was Artist-In-Residence at The Dance Centre. She has been a facilitator at New Works In Practice and The Dance Centre Outreach Programs and has served as a mentor for many emerging artists.
