Artists in Residence

Brazilian-born choreographer and performer Vitor Freitas (he/him) is the Artistic Director of Travelling Bodies, a Victoria-based company featuring rising local dancers. The group will work on Raízes Telúrica, an eco-ancestral dance work that explores queer, immigrant, and Afro-Brazilian identity. The piece blends contemporary and Afro-Brazilian forms, Orisha embodiment, and poetry, offering a visceral reflection on resilience, ancestry, displacement, and belonging.
Vitor Freitas (he/him), Artistic Director of Travelling Bodies (Victoria), is a Brazilian-born principal choreographer and multidisciplinary performer. His work integrates contemporary dance, theatre, and poetry to create original productions that explore identity, migration, and cultural memory. Guided by Afro-Brazilian roots and a queer immigrant lens, he weaves contemporary and ancestral forms into works that honour lineage, embody resilience, and invite audiences into a shared space of reflection and transformation. Currently based in British Columbia and represented by DEI Talent Management Inc., Freitas is recognized for his deep expressiveness, technical precision, and commitment to culturally rooted narratives. His artistry is defined by his ability to embody both traditional and contemporary forms, bringing heart and transformation to every role.
Born in Saquarema, Brazil, Freitas’s artistic foundation was shaped by a rich mix of training in classical ballet, ballroom, and contemporary dance. He trained at Daumas Academia Escola de Dança and Marcia Amorim Dança de Salão, studying disciplines such as modern dance, jazz, samba, forró, soltinho, and bolero. These early years were marked by an intense curiosity for rhythm and form, which quickly translated into professional opportunities.
In Brazil, Freitas performed on one of the country’s most-watched television programs, Caldeirão do Huck (TV Globo), and appeared as a featured dancer in the Netflix film Acampamento de Férias 2 starring Lucas Neto. These projects highlighted his charisma, camera fluency, and dynamic stage presence.
In 2019, Freitas immigrated to Canada to continue his artistic evolution. He studied Russian ballet and immersed himself in acting, voice, and character development at Midrash CIA, Spotlight Academy, and the Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts. He trained under coaches Jo Leslie and Michael Goodwin, while also expanding his creative horizons into choreography and multidisciplinary performance.
Freitas’s credits in Canada include roles in Reginald the Vampire (SYFY), The Wedding Veil 3 (Hallmark), and as a featured Tango Dancer for Pacific Opera Victoria directed by Jacques Lemay. He also performed and choreographed in original stage works such as Im:print (Theatre – ICA), Autocorrect by Kemi Craig, and The Salty Scent of Home with Celebratory Theatre.
His growing portfolio includes collaborations with musicians like BBNo$ and La Chuparosa in stylized music videos, where he blends acting and dance with visual intensity. Freitas’s modelling and commercial work includes campaigns for Ecologyst, Hotel Zed Tofino, Harbour Air, Tourism Tofino, and the City of Langford, frequently portraying same-sex couples and community-based characters with warmth and relatability.
In 2024, he appeared in Dior’s Showcase event and was a featured dancer at the Music Gala Heals with BBNo$. Most recently, he danced in Jungle Bobby’s 2024 production at Backyard–Phillips and continues to contribute to editorial projects and promotional campaigns across British Columbia
