FREE Hung Dance Workshop | BIRDY Repertoire

November 15 @ 10:45 am - 12:15 pm

Join Taiwan’s Hung Dance for a workshop blending body isolation and Tai Chi, exploring the dynamic balance between motion and stillness.

Register online beginning 12pm, Nov. 3

This dance workshop introduces Hung Dance’s signature movement vocabulary, exploring the dynamic interplay between motion and stillness in the body. The technique blends body isolation with Tai Chi principles: each action begins at a single joint or muscle while the rest of the body remains still, then gradually expands through spiralling and spinning movements. This approach can be applied to all parts of the body, creating a unique dialogue of flowing motion within stillness.

About the Instructor

Cheng I-han, Rehearsal Director of Hung Dance

A Keelung native, Cheng I-han graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts’ School of Dance and received her master’s degree from TNUA’s Graduate Institute of Dance. She joined Hung Dance in 2017, where she is currently a full-time dancer and rehearsal director. Cheng participated in Lai Hung-Chung’s works BIRDY and Watcher which won numerous international choreography awards. She performed in the company’s annual productions Boundless, Out of Elegant, and See You, and was the principal dancer in tours of Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Estonia, United States, Cote d’Ivoire, Singapore, South Korea, and Hong Kong. In 2019, Cheng played a dancer in her self-choreography—the short work Trapped, which was a participant in the first edition of the Stray Bird Platform and also invited to be part of the New Dance for Asia International Festival in South Korea. In 2020, Cheng began developing Trapped into the full-length solo work No. Me, which was toured and performed at National Theater’s Experimental Theater, National Taichung Theater’s Black Box, and Kaohsiung Experimental Theater.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Photos will be taken during the workshop. A photo release form will be provided, but signing is NOT mandatory to participate. Participants under 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign the waiver and photo release form before class begins.

Hung Dance takes flight at the Royal Theatre on November 14 and 15 with BIRDY, an award-winning contemporary dance work by “one of the best young choreographers working in Taiwan today” (Taipei Times), Artistic Director Lai Hung-chung. Blending Western mythology and Eastern tradition, BIRDY explores the tension between freedom and limitation through exquisite movement and striking imagery. Set to an eclectic mix of electronic and Chinese classical music, the piece transforms traditional Chinese opera props—like the warrior’s pheasant feather—into symbols of a bird in flight.
