Amber Downie-Back (she/they) is an interdisciplinary movement artist interested in creating immersive and process-inspired performances. As part of their residency at Dance Victoria, they will continue to develop the performance/installation titled on the nature of… in collaboration with dancer and creator Emilie van der Waals (Utrecht, Netherlands) and sound and video designer Angus Gaffney (Victoria, BC). The project was awarded the Chrystal Dance Prize in 2022/23.
on the nature of… explores memory and nostalgia, investigating what we carry with us: past moments, past selves, transformations, and what we wish to challenge, adapt, or release. Delving through a collection of archived memories and moving collages, untethered selves interact with the notion of the past as a set of sensitive ecosystems, investigating the erosive processes of lives lived, reflecting on the nature of… deaths, dreams, and change.
