Call for Dance Residency Proposals

Dance Victoria’s Dance Residencies Program for Choreographers and Collectives

What:

Dance Victoria is conducting an open call for independent dance artists and collectives in BC that are interested in a creative residency at its studios in 2021/22. Artists are invited to submit a proposal for consideration. PLEASE NOTE: Dance Victoria is currently considering upgrading one of its studios with new lighting and curtains to make it adaptable for making short dance films.

A residency at Dance Victoria includes access to its studios and a financial contribution to artist fees. Out of town artists may also qualify for accommodation and travel support to be negotiated on a per contract basis. Other supports may include the professional services of an outside eye/dramaturge and/or technician (including camera person).

Pieces developed through this program will be considered for presentation during Dance Victoria’s annual Dance Days festival (January 2022) or in a digital event that features new dance (in development).

Why:

Dance Victoria operates with the following mandate: To enhance the appreciation of dance in the Capital Region by presenting and developing excellent professional dance, supporting emerging dance artists and choreographers, and engaging the community in the experience and celebration of dance.

In 2018, Dance Victoria’s Board of Directors supported the mission for Dance Victoria to:

• Continue to support a comprehensive residency and commissioning program for independent artists;
• As a member of Canada’s dance community, strive to make a significant contribution to a healthy and vital dance milieu; and
• Assist independent dance artists in their vision by providing access to its studios and financial resources (public and private sector).

How:

Dance Victoria is currently accepting succinct project proposals (no more than three 8.5” x 11” pages, font size 11 points or larger). Deadline for submissions is May 31, 5:00 p.m. PDT. Your proposal needs to include:

• Name and contact of applicant;
• Name of company and/or collective;
• Title and brief description of project including current status (i.e., at the beginning of the process, some material has been created, nearing the end of the process, or piece will be finished during the residency);
• Names of artists involved in the residency;
• Desired time period and length for your residency (Please Note: Victoria-based dance artists, may opt to work at a more leisurely pace over a longer period of time);
• A statement about what you hope to accomplish during your residency; and
• An indication of your interest in working with an outside eye or having your work filmed.

Proponents may be contacted for additional information during the assessment period. All applicants will be notified about the status of their proposal by June 30, 2021.

Eligibility:

Eligible choreographers will have:

• Choreographed a minimum of three different pieces, each of five minutes or more;
• Completed formal training as either a dancer or choreographer;
• Had experience working in the professional dance milieu; and
• A demonstrated desire to continue to grow their practice and to be open to direction.

This program is open to either emerging or established artists.
