The internationally acclaimed Circa takes the Royal Theatre stage on Saturday, February 10 for a jaw-dropping night of contemporary circus. Presented by Dance Victoria, the Brisbane, Australia-based company will perform its new, celebrated work titled Humans 2.0 as part of its ongoing world tour.

Humans 2.0 is a tightly woven choreography of bodies, pulsing with music by composer Ori Lichtik, and revealed in Paul Jackson’s dramatic lighting. Created by circus visionary YaronLifschitz, Humans 2.0 is intimate, primal, and deeply engaged with the challenge of being human.

A sequel to Circa’s 2017 Humans, the title alludes to the superhuman abilities of the cast. Divided into several movements with no intermission, the work takes the audience on an uninterrupted roller-coaster blending drama, humour, play, and gripping athletic feats. A symphony of acrobatics, sound and light, this is next level circus by Circa!

Circa is the first contemporary circus company presented in Dance Victoria’s 27-year history and a special addition to the regular Dance at the Royal season. “We are thrilled to feature Circa, a company renowned across the globe for its innovation, beauty and athleticism, to mark this artistic milestone for Dance Victoria,” shares Gillian Jones, Executive Director. “One exciting aspect of including the company in our 2023/24 season is the opportunity to engage audiences of all ages (Humans 2.0 is recommended for ages 8+ and is accessible through our Pay Your Age program). At the same time, we believe this performance will captivate more seasoned dance-lovers, for whom Circa may be an entry into the world of contemporary circus.”

During Circa’s time in Victoria, the company’s artists will facilitate two free masterclasses for youth and adults at Island Circus School, as part of Dance Victoria’s Community Engagement programs. Finally, this presentation is made possible with generous support from Season Sponsor Derma Spa, Lead Presentation Sponsor Turnabout Luxury Resale (Oak Bay, Victoria), and public support from the Government of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, Government of BC, BC Arts Council, and the CRD Arts Development office.

About Circa

Circa celebrates its 20th anniversary practicing and innovating the art form that has come to be known as “contemporary circus.” Blurring the lines between circus, theatre, dance, and athletics, Circa’s approach and aesthetic are stripped down, dropping the frippery traditionally associated with the form so that audiences can better marvel at the pure human achievement. Since 2004, Circa has toured the world – performing in more than 40 countries to over 1.5 million people. Its works has been received with standing ovations, rave reviews, and sold-out houses across six continents.

One of the world’s leading performance companies, Circa is at the forefront of the new wave of contemporary Australian circus – pioneering how extreme physicality can create powerful and moving performances. Under the direction of Yaron Lifschitz, Circa features an ensemble of exceptional, multi-skilled circus artists.  Fuelled by the question ‘what is possible in circus?’ Circa is leading the way with a diverse range of thrilling creations that “redraw the limits to which circus can aspire.” (The Age)

Humans 2.0 is a seriously sensational spectacle: as aesthetic as it is athletic, as comedic as it is grave, and all in all, a visceral delight.” –THE CONVERSATION
